Getting started
How to get started
A Mind Map is a visual representation of hierarchical information that includes a central idea surrounded by connected branches of associated topics. It's a great way to organize your thoughts and to share your thoughts with others. A Mind Map starts with a central theme to which you can add topics (bubbles, balloons). You can add child topics to each topic. A topic and all of its child topics are called a branch.
When first starting SimpleMind a new Mind Map is created automatically. Enter any text as your Central Theme. To add more Topics, use the -tool and drag it anywhere you want. To add a Cross Link, drag the -tool to an existing topic. To learn more, check out the Editor Help.
Where can I purchase SimpleMind desktop for Windows?
SimpleMind desktop for Windows can be purchased from our web site optionally in a bundle with SimpleMind desktop for Mac.
SimpleMind for Android can be only be purchased via Google Play store or SamsungApps. SimpleMind for iPad and iPhone can only be purchased from Apple's iTunes, either as app or InApp purchase inside SimpleMind+.
Is SimpleMind desktop available in my language?
SimpleMind desktop is only available in US English. There are no language packs available and there's no other way to make it work in other languages.
What Windows versions are supported?
SimpleMind for Windows is created for and tested on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 desktop. Windows RT is not supported. We do not test on other Windows versions such as WinXP and WinServer. To find out if SimpleMind for Windows runs on your computer, install the Trial. Except for the 30-day time limitation the trial is identical to the full edition, therefore: if the trial runs OK, the full edition will run OK too.
Where can I download the latest version of SimpleMind for desktop?
SimpleMind has a built-in update checker that automatically checks for updates. Alternatively, you can download the latest version via the download web-page mentioned in the delivery email. That web-page offers the latest version available. Do not download the Trial, it cannot be activated into a full version.
Installation problems
After you have purchased the full edition, you receive a delivery email with download and activation details. Use that email to download the full edition and install it. After installing, start SimpleMind and activate it using the activation data from the same email. You can verify you are running the full edition with: Main Menu ➜ SimpleMind ➜ About. The About dialog shows either your licensed name and key for the full edition, or 'trial' for the trial.
If you get an error message stating that the downloaded setup file is corrupt, this is either because the download was incomplete, or a virus scanner has blocked the download. You need to temporarily disable the virus scanner and re-download the setup.
If you, after installing the full edition, start SimpleMind and still get the Trial version or still see the '30-day Trial has expired' message, this means the trial version was not replaced with the full edition. Again, this is usually caused by a virus scanner or something similar that blocked replacing the trial edition. To work around this, first uninstall the trial, temporarily disable the virus scanner and re-download and re-install the full edition from the activation e-mail. Note: uninstalling the trial will not delete your existing Mind Maps.
Recently some virus scanners report the trial contains a virus or a trojan. This is a false positive and you can install safely. Should this happen, please send us a screenshot of the notification and a screenshot of what virus definitions you use. We will contact your virus scanner provider to update their virus definitions. If the download is blocked, you need to temporarily disable the virus scanner and re-download SimpleMind.

Freemind does not save spatial information and SimpleMind uses its own lay outer to position topics. Once imported, the Mind Map is stored in the native .smmx format.
